I know of them as 'fiber-cane' reeds.
I once played with a 'doubler' who used them. The advantage being that you can pick up a fairly cold instrument in the middle of a show and not have to worry if the reed is soggy or dry, because it plays consistently.
My own opinion is that while they have tremendous advantage in such a situation, their tone is, ah, lacking. I tried one of his and found it easy-blowing, but without the color and dynamic range of an 'organic' reed.
That was 30+ years ago; from what I've read, they've been improved since then. But I know of no professional oboist who uses them consistently in place of the Usual cane reed.
