Apologies for my forgetfulness: I remember you now! I'm just bad with names.
You're right about wisdom and playing towards the tip. What I'd recommend then is reed exercises (out of the instrument) - using fingers ONLY to prevent the reed falling to the floor - like:
1. while blowing, pulling reed in and pushing out (with lips)
2. wah-wah-waaaahhhh
3. tonging without the tongue: just air supply (gut pressure and release) and mouth opening/closing
These have tremendously helped me improve my tuning when I started university: my expressiveness was good back then, but my tuning was downright bad.
I think they also physically help sensitize the ears - possibly the extra pressure on the ear canal from inside exercises something.... all I can say is my hearing for tuning improved too.
