This post has been up for 5 days and I'm the first to comment... I'll take it as an honour!
Listen, as a Canadian who never grew up anywhere near in the worst of our own cities --- and I've visited Detroit and others enough to know that our friends down South have it worse --- it is really not my place to venture any opion. But I do have to say I believe these people to be heroes in every sense of the word.
If humans are the only animals on earth capable of making such complex music with such intricate tools, if the purpose of music in evolution and science is so elusive, then how close to our soul music must be and how alienated must humans be for whom its expression is so forcibly denied! And how much more revealing and liberating must it be for these children to reconnect with it?
I was a teacher for only a few years in contexts that even I consider easy. But I didn't have the nerve to put up with the hogwash that was there... how much more do these people have overcome to bring about what should be without question?
These people are trying to Ring the Liberty Bell loudly once again, these people (organisers AND children AND family AND comunity) may be the best personifications of the Home of the Brave trying to breathe life back into the Land of the Free.
Arriba El Sistema Venezuela and GO PHILLY GO!
