If you bought some profiled Jones cane then you should know a few things. The reed is basically already made.....the tip and heart are ready to go. Just soak the cane for about 20 minutes and fold the cane carefully. You can measure the exact middle of the tip.....end to end and bend it there or just bend slowly trying to match the small ends of the cane perfectly together. If you don't bend it accurately one tip will be longer than the other. I used to bend it over a metal ruler just estimating getting the center right. Put the staple on the mandrel. As far as length to tie it on.......it should be tied short.. 70-71 mm. The reason for this is that the tip on Jones reeds are a certain length and if you tied the reed on longer and clipped it down to say 70mm....the tilp would be unplayable. (too short) The rest of the reed making process is the same. as if you were just tying on a gouged, shaped and folded piece of cane. If this is your first attempt at reed making try to make lots of reeds. You shouldn't worry about adjusting them for now. If the reed is bad....break it and tie another piece of cane on. You will have big differences in reeds at first. John
