There are no tricks except for Aspirin/Tylenol/Cold medicine.... and even that has not really prevented the head explosions! But the medicine with "sinus" in the title usually helps the most.

Easy reeds help, but only if you don't have to compensate for instable notes.

Now try playing in a military band with the thick red British-type uniforms in a smoke-filled dining room with a migraine headache!

Its all a part of being in love with the instrument.
