Hi Peter,
Thank you very much for your usual informative comments. You are one of very few persons who teaches me something new every time. Thank you.
I recently bought a 50 year old Rigoutat that is ring system on top joint and rest of them covered. I made a major investment to completely rebuilt by a famous repair person (the one even you recommend highly) but I was not happy about it at all. I am happy with the oboe, it produces the typical classque bore Rigoutat tone and responses, and good intonation. But the workmanship and attitude of the technician was something I do not wish never to repeat ever. The overhaul costed me more than the purchase price of the oboe that is more than a purchase price of half way decent modern oboe. I still have to work on it to make it air tight. Fixing a bad padding/adjusting job takes longer and more tedious than stripping down and redoing it. It did not turn out to be a good deal at all. Morale of experience was to choose the repair technician carefully, very carefully, not only the technical ability, but also the integrity and attitude toward different customers.
I want to rebuild one myself - strip down, replate the keys and posts, replace all rods, springs, pads and bumpers, clean and recondition the wood, repair tone holes as needed, and adjust keys and pads. Hopefully I do not have to go into re-voicing as I do not have the equipment to do so.
If you come across a good candidate, please alert me.
