Minimum supply list
1. cane -- non-profiled gouged and shaped is fine -- and I imagine less expensive than profiled cane
2. tubes -- recycled staples are fine. Just make sure you make note of how long they are before you tie
3. nylong thread -- start w/ FF b/c it is harder to break!
4. mandrel -- you need one. It may make it harder to use recycled tubes if your mandrel doesn't fit the tube.
5. 6" ruler w/ metric markings
6. Plaque -- yes, you must
7. Knife -- there are a million recommendations on this. I prefer double hollow ground knives which run about $30.00; you can search this forum for other suggestions; there are "student" knives which run <$20; I have never used them. REMEMBER -- SHARP KNIVES ARE THE LYNCH PIN OF THE WHOLE OPERATION. Although it will be the most expensive single item on your tool kit list, IT WILL ALSO BE YOUR BIGGEST BANE AND SOURCE OF FRUSTRATION IF YOU SKIMP HERE!
8. sharpening stone -- at minimum a fine grit India stone, although again this is an area where there is a raft of opinion re: what works best.
9. Cutting block. Absolutely. Try for something in the medium range (just shy of 2" in diameter).
10. I don't think you need razor blades or any other special device to clip your tip
