I'm definitely going to be thinking about making my own. I'm going to play around with some of my own first and work at adjusting them before heading into the big projects. But, while considering this, I'd like to get a list of must have supplies for making my own...partly to see how much I'm going to need to invest in it.
At first, I'd like to just get the basic things that I would need to have in order to shape and finish a reed. I'd like to start out with the gouged, shaped, folded, and profiled cane. That seems like it would be easiest to work with. I will try to recycle tubes from my store bought reeds, anything I can do to save a little money. Like I said, I only want to get the necessary supplies; if it is something I can live without for awhile that would be great (just in case this doesn't work out for me, I don't want to have a fortune invested).
So far, after reading into this, here are some things that I've concluded that I will probably need for sure.
Cane (gouged, shaped, folded, and profiled)
Reed Knife (not sure what kind though)
Staples (will used recylced at first)

Something to seal the reed edges? (I've seen things like fish skin, do I need this?)
Tip cutter (from what I've seen of the cane it looks like it just needs to be folded in half, adjusted, and the tip cut; would this be about correct?)
Also, what about plaques, mandrels, ect? Do I *need* these?
I'd greatly appreciate any supply lists or any help you can give!
Thanks!
