 Re: Embouchure

Ahhh, an embochure change. I just recently had a bit of a change myself, and I'm still working on it. Changing an embouchure is a slow process that you will probably find tiresome and annoying, but it will be well worth it. The best way I've found to make a change of this sort is when you put the oboe in your mouth, everytime, check your embouchure and don't start playing untill you feel content with it. Obviously you can not accomplish this during performance, but it is good to do during practice. When your not around your oboe, practice with your straw at dinner or a pencil.

Different teachers will recommend different embouchures, but a good general method is this: Drop your jaw as far as comftorable, pucker your face so that your lips feel as if they are moving forward. You also need to make sure you are supporting the reed with the muscles in your lip. This can really only be shown by somone in person. The reed should be as far out as possible with out hindering the sound or articulation. Of course the best way to learn a good embouchre is a good teacher, find one if you can.

The flat second octave notes is a good thing! This means that you are creating enough space in your mouth. To compensate, do not tense up the mouth and throat muscles and do not return to your current embouchure. Rather, roll in on the reed as needed. My teacher refers to this as "spring action." In other words, the reed should not move on the lips, but rather the lips should roll in and out.

Somthing that is really is helpful in this process is recording yourself. If you have a tape recorder or even a computer with a microphone. Record yourself at a bit of a distance so that your sound is not distorted. You will probably be suprised as to what you hear. Playing with a larger, more open embouchre will give you a larger, richer, more controlled sound.
