To my mind there are accomplished oboists and then there are musicians who play the oboe. I've come across any number of the former and only one or two of the latter. Goossens is one, Holliger is another.

In the end it's all a matter of taste, but for me if the music doesn't "speak" through the playing then it bores me rigid. Holliger is in some ways like Maria Callas - both possess(ed) musical genius and both can at times sound like a scalded cat. What I admire most about Holliger is that there is absolutely no gap between thought and presentation. He can change direction mid phrase or even mid note if he feels like it. I don't always agree with what he does but, regardless of the repertoire, he is never less than compelling.

I have heard much sleaker sounds from other players but rarely do they get to the heart of the matter musically with the same unerring instinct.
