Hi Mike

you're right! It can be a complete conundrum at times which direction to take for the best. It's often all a matter of balance with reeds for them to feel comfortable. That elusive balance differs profoundly from one person to the next. Certainly amateurs should follow the advice of their teachers and initially play on free- blowing reeds which will not cause them too much discomfort. But when you control all areas of reed-making things usually naturally improve. This can be a fairly long process; decisions have to be made about types of cane, curvature and density; what staples provide the best support to the reed and give the best intonation, and how thick to gouge the cane and with what shaper tip design to shape. And that's all before you even think about scraping the reed, which is where the real headache begins. Yesterday, today and almost certainly tomorrow I have spent, and will have spent, 3 hours occupied with making reeds for rehearsals starting on Sunday for concerts this coming week. 10 hours of reed-making, and no guarantee that the perfect reed will arrive, is often a reality of oboe playing life. It's easy to see why people skip learning the skill and buy. But who can afford it long term?
