Jamesoboe, your comments are good to read at this time. (I almost wrote good to reed!) I have been experimenting with reeds and have found that a softer cane can take the "edge" off of the tone and make it darker, but at the cost of more effort of the embouchre to keep it in tune and in control. I went back to one of my harder cane but very easy-blowing reeds just yesterday and found so much more energy available to devote to expression. And, honestly, I doubt that the people I play with would notice the difference! What my pianist friend was more likely to notice the other day is that I decided to call it quits about twenty minutes earlier in our practice session the other day, because my darker soft-cane reed was wearing me out! So sometimes it is better to go for the reed that's easy to play, not the one that meets our expectations of how a reed is supposed to sound.
