Thanks for the replies.
I did wonder if it was mould (or something similar) but as it doesn't seem to have evolved since I've had the cane, I'm assuming it's not.

And Jyhola, you're right, if I look on the inside, there is no mark so presumably once scrapped, I won't see the marks on the outside either.
