discoloration in a plant sometimes indicates that oxidation has taken place somewhere along the line.
as to the effect of this on reed performance, no: I've used some ancient cane with brown spots/lines in it and have gotten really good results.
so don't let it bother you, just keep after that eluseive search for the perfect reed!
