Hello Toni and All:
I just HAD to respond to this post...
Yes, playing the oboe CAN improve lung function in certain situations. Some of you may recall the newspaper story of my friend Brian in the USA who, in his 30's, almost died because of chronic asthma and was advised to "put his affairs in order". Brian had to stop working (as a respiratory therapist, no less!!) and was in very rough shape.
True to his nature, he took a proactive approach, and started playing the oboe again after a 15-year hiatus from student days. From just a few minutes a day practising at the outset, he now plays four hours a day!! Now, several years later, he is again working as a respiratory therapist at the local hospital, and, although he still has respiratory issues, he is ALIVE, active in his musical community and leading a good life!! His doctors attribute this turnabout to his playing the oboe.
A violinist friend of mine (also from the medical field), who has had life-long asthma problems, has recently asked me for some of my "practise-grade" English horn reeds - she has borrowed an instrument and is determined to give "Double-reed Therapy" a try and learn another instrument as well!! Although the physical issues with asthma appear to be different from Toni's, hopefully the "back pressure" idea will help Toni too!! Give it a good try Toni, and best of luck!
Nigel
