Good questions! I want to know the answers to those as well!
I can tell you some things....
A colleague of mine had a reputable teacher in country C who plays on X instruments because he used to study in country F with a teacher who plays on X instruments. This teacher in country F obviously had the connections so would personally pick an instrument for the student from the instrument X show room. The teacher from country C no longer resides in country F of course but apparently, when he visited X himself years after his gradution to buy an instrument himself, he was not allowed access to the same storage that his teacher had access to......
I had my new Buffet Greenline picked by hand by a friend and colleague of someone else i know in Berlin and that was my fortune. Beautiful instrument, but who knows? Maybe it's not even close to what herr Mayer plays!
