Piccolos are often playing sharp, going undetected for various reasons. The piccolo instrument, especially the conical wood instrument, must have perfect sealing or it will tend to be very difficult to play in tune, even though they can play all the notes. It is up to the piccolo player to play in tune and there is little the clarinet or oboe player can do about it. The piccolo player should work with a tuner and a good repairman.

One piccolo player I knew who had a significant position said she tuned up to her piano at home!!!!! She always played very sharp.

Amateur flutists are often sharp in the third register. They can fix this by using the Galway recommendations on embouchure and practice.
