Thank you for the comments. This leaves me with a bit of a problem though. When ordering an oboe, you don't have the chance to try before you buy. I was told by Peter Hurd to order a copy of Tom's oboe. However, now I'm interested in the different woods. It will probably be at least a couple of years before I get my oboe, so maybe I can see how the cocobolo wood turns out by then. I have never heard of using snakewood. Anyhow, I know Laubin uses a sleeve but some people argue that the sleeve interferes with the sound. I'm not so sure about that or what they mean. Is the sleeve supposed to dampen the sound somewhat? At any rate, when you're talking about exotic woods that may crack more easily, I suppose the sleeve is a good idea. I also read an article stating that Grenadilla isn't necessarily the best sounding wood, but it's used because it's one of the easiest woods to work with and doesn't crack as easily as many of the other woods. So, is Tom experimenting with a "plexiglass" oboe similar to the newer Marigaux one? I really hope that the band I play in does the competition in Minneapolis in a couple of years. I'd love to go over to Tom's place in Rochester to see if he has oboes of different woods that I would be able to try. Maybe he will have a "plexiglass" oboe by then I could try.
