True, it shrinks, but generally only .01 of a mm or so. So if you're gouging at .60 wet, then when it dries it will dry to only .59 so it shouldn't be that much of a concern.

If you're having more shrinkage than that, then perhaps your cane is too soft, or the gouge isn't sturdy enough.
