 Re: concepts - air

one of the concepts that i always do with new students on their first lesson is to say the word "HO", and to say it as deeply as they can so that their soft pallate raises, then i try to get them to say "HO" as they are playing, it keeps the tone round and dark. also i will poke them in the stomach at random as they are playing in order to make sure their stomach muscles are tight. tightening the rectus abdominus muscles, is interesting because it is practically the only muslce group the you can tighten that will also close your larynx. so really the muscles will help to expell the air from your lungs, but the closed larynx with further compress the air.. giving it "intensity". don't confuse larynx with your throat though, they are 2 different things. also getting them to imagine that their air is like a ski slope, and that you cant to ski down to the bottom easily, not bumpily.. that seems to help them quite a bit. hope these help.
