I've had to do that frequently and my experience has been that while I'm playing the oboe part, the English horn reed dries out. It also seems to me that my English horn reeds need more hydration than the oboe reeds. I usually mark my music at a rest where I can get my English horn reed and at another rest not too long before I have to switch instruments where I can get the reed out of the water and back on the bocal.
