My last lesson I couldn't do anything except play sharp. My teacher tried my oboe, my reed, I tried her oboe, her reed etc.
Conclusion, it was me, the oboe and the reed.
I bought some new reeds and waited for my strained ribs to get better from when I pulled them moving crates at work......the sharpness is almost gone!
But I'll probably still blame the reed, or my ribs, or the weather.....

Exactly my philosophy! By eliminating one factor I can concentrate on others. My current oboe is a Howarth S10, in good shape although at least second hand. It's not a bad beasty but I know I can get a lot more out of other instruments. For example, I lots marks on my recent exam for lack of phrasing at times (particularly on long G and A above the stave), and at others because I went beyond my technical ability striving for something and therefore ended up with no notes coming out. When I played the same thing on the Loree I could do all those things a million times better even still using the same shop bought unaltered reeds and not being able to use the fancy keywork as I don't know what it all does yet. Soooo satisfying to be able to blame the equipment!
I'll see you in Howarths....I'll be one drooling in front of those beautiful shiny expensive things over my budget. I'm determined to keep to £4000 or thereabouts. I've got £5000 set aside but I also want to squeeze a 415 pitch second hand baroque oboe and flute out of that money......never say I am not ambitious!
