I began making reeds in high school for oboe, I didn't work on them as much as I should have so it took me until I got to college to really buckle down and work on them. However, for you I would reccomend taking some lessons for maybe a month just to get you starting on tying them up, the scraping is really a trial and error and depending on your teacher, there are always tid bits of info you can gather from reed makers in general. There is no right or wrong way to make a reed it all depends on your personal style, embouchure, etc. But it's not as bad as it may seem. Just get a well rounded introduction to it and begin practicing, it won't be easy at first but you'll get it, everyone practices and eventually gathers the info. I have students who are in junior high who make their own reeds, there not the greatest, but that is why I am here so they can ask me questions and learn the tricks. Books and manuals are helpful, hand on hand is better for some people, but if you really enjoy the instrument, don't let the reeds scare you, were just stronger players because we can handle reed making and practicing! So go for it!
