I know this isn't a bassoon forum, but it's a double reed question.
I am playing the bassoon in a woodwind methods class, and I love it. I started playing five days ago, and I can already play the bassoon solo at the beginning of The Rite of Spring without honks or finger stumbles. When I get the money I want to buy one. The reed issue is holding me back though. If I could learn to make my own reeds it would be OK. I love making working with small tools and creating finely-detailed things. I'm just worried that it's harder than I think. I don't want to have to spend months working with a bassoonist to learn.
Is it feasible to learn reed-making from a book, and how long might it take to learn? Assume that I have the patience, muscular control and eagerness to learn
