I've been told by David Teitelbaum who works at Laubin (hope he doesn't mind if I quote him) that oiling the bore can actually promote cracking. Also, this is why Laubin uses a sleeve in the upper joint, to prevent cracking. There has been much debate as to whether this sleeve affects the sound, but there are an awful lot of professional players out there who love Laubins and sound great on them. Other companies use sleeves as well. I've heard of people useing a water seal, but I guess this doesn't last very long and has to be re-applied often.
