 cracking up: prevention

I know this has been covered in days gone by, but I am curious about y'all's opinion when it comes to oiling the bore to prevent cracks; I remember lots of discussion (on this site) regarding temperature and humidity, and have been told by repairmen to either NEVER oil an oboe's bore or to be sure to do it twice a year.

I have NOT surfed the sites of the manufacturers, nor do I know about oil and old vs newer instruments.

Whaddaya think?

I'm sure there's been several posts about bore oiling. Use the search option on this bboard, and check back a bit. You're bound to find a million posts on this topic.

I've been told by David Teitelbaum who works at Laubin (hope he doesn't mind if I quote him) that oiling the bore can actually promote cracking. Also, this is why Laubin uses a sleeve in the upper joint, to prevent cracking. There has been much debate as to whether this sleeve affects the sound, but there are an awful lot of professional players out there who love Laubins and sound great on them. Other companies use sleeves as well. I've heard of people useing a water seal, but I guess this doesn't last very long and has to be re-applied often.

My latest inclination is to use a small amount of sweet almond oil inside the bell when it looks dry; otherwise, I avoid oiling. I started out in a very dry climate, and most of the players there used oil sparingly.

thanks for the tip, I'll look into the 'archives', Cooper.
