I like that story, d-oboe :-)
I spent many months trying to figure out if I'd play clarinet or oboe (I've been playing saxophone since 1996). The oboe kept calling to me but the clarinet made the most sense. Everyone I spoke to kept saying how hard the oboe would be, how much the reeds are a pain, how hard it is to play in tune, etc. I heard so many negative comments that I should have turned my back on it. But no, my heart won out, and I'm sticking with my oboe. I can't express how happy I am about the decision. It was a terribly difficult decision for me, but I know I made the right one.
I'm 30 years old and just starting. There's nothing I wouldn't do to turn back time and have started at 20 instead (or 10 haha). If I had figured this out for myself while still in college I think I would have still had a chance at a career in it. At this point, I am going to try to become the best I can be and hope that it is good enough to get me into some amateur orchestra some day. Luckily I'm in the NYC area, so there are many of those around. Let's hope they have a seat for me as second oboist some years from now.
I know how it feels to feel too old, but I think you can still make it. If you really love it, go for it!
P.S. I love the Sinfonia Concertante by Mozart too *smile*
