Dear Demon,
I was also a clarinetist for many years but a few chance encounters with the oboe made me switch to the oboe and that was only when I was already 22! I really loved playing the oboe! You really need to like the oboe a lot because when you start making reeds (which I hate!), that is the ony thing that will make it all worth it! It will take a lot of work (as usual) and 'smart' practicing because in a sense, we have a lot of catching up to do compared with those who started since they were young. Nevertheless, it is all possible but after some time, audiences won't know the difference between you and the other guy who has been playing it all his life.
It took me a long while to decide dropping the clarinet but I had to convince myself that the oboe was what I really wanted and not just an easy way out from the clarinet.
Write to me if you'd like and we can chat more!
Best regards
Kai
ps: I was recently in HK performing with the Asian Youth Orchestra! I would love to go back there, lovely place!
