 Re: Crack or wood grain?

Scott --

There are cracks which go down to the bore, thus making the instrument leak through the crack. It seems to me that it would have to be a much longer crack than what you describe to create such a catastrophic crack to the bore. I have only met one player (in my many decades of playing) who ever described such an event to me.

It is likely that a small crack, extending upwards from a post and not headed towards a tonehole, would not need repair. But only a repairperson examining the instrument could determine that with certainty. Some players use superglue on such a crack; my repairman recommends against that, as superglue does not expand and contract with the wood and would not hold the sides of the crack together when the wood moves. Some people use a black epoxy to fill the crack, I think more for aesthetic reasons than to stop the crack from growing.

So, keep an eye on it and see if it grows. And it wouldn't hurt to closely inspect the other frequent areas of cracking.
