Just to add one observation to what Susan has said, for a clarinetist moving to oboe.
There is a huge difference in the volume of air, that is, the total amount of air-per-second that can fit through a vibrating oboe reed. Anyone used to the volume of air that can be blown through a clarinet will be astonished at how much sound the oboe produces with so little air. The problem may indeed be one of throttling back and matching the air-stream to this new instrument.
You have to maintain the support, but get used to the feeling of almost no air (relatively speaking) actually going through the instrument.
And then (of course) you have to learn to breathe out as well as in, because the brain still needs oxygen ... :-)
