Hi John,
I appreciate the information (it's right on), my teacher has been pretty much telling me the same thing and I am taking it to heart.
One problem that makes things difficult, but not impossible, is my profession: I am a steelworker and work all of the shifts on a swingshift basis. It can make it a struggle to get consistent playing/practice time in so that I can, as you say, memorize and internalize the techniques necessary for me to progress. Summertime poses a special problem in that there is a lot of forced overtime; I might be expecting to go home after an eight hour shift and end up staying for another turn (and this can happen more than once during a standard work week). That can put a damper on my practice sessions as I will use my oboe practice as a stress reliever after a particularly rough day.
Oh, unfortunately, the beating up on myself is something I excel too well in. Kathie tells me to try and relax and not be so hard on myself. Easier said than done!
Hey, thanks for taking the time to send the advice. I would have gotten back to you sooner, but I had some computer problems and it took me a couple of days to figure out what was going and correct it.
Take care and may God bless you and yours. Let me know how you're doing with your playing and I'll try to do the same.
