Personally, I don't think that "good - very good - excellent - mint" gives very much information, either!

I would prefer descriptions such as:

Excellent intonation with no false notes
Full, even tone throughout all registers
quiet, positive keywork with no plating problems and little play
Maintains a vacuum for 30 seconds
One crack, expertly repaired, nowhere near a tone-hole
Fully re-corked and regulated

etc. etc.

In short - there is no substitute for taking the instrument home for two weeks and playing your heart out. If after that you still are not sure, take it straight back.
