Wow, this whole thread is tremendously illuminating and helpful, and I'm going to print it out for future reference. I actually didn't know you could do a "legato tongue", but now that I know it exists, I'll definitely work on it.

I have wondered about this in the past, about how the trick was done. There are several places in my music where the composer has definitely marked a slur down to a lower note (the worst one is a G to C, bleagh), and I just cannot get the C to play without tonguing, I mean, the note just will NOT come out. So I'll try "legato tongue".
