Saliva will tend to dry out the cork. To keep it lubricated, use lanolin, as Jonathan Dlouhy recommends. It is superior to cork grease, spit & Vaseline. And you only need to apply it once to reed cork. It should also be used very sparingly on the cork tenons of the oboe/EH.
