I've had much success with using the English Horn Swabs from Gary Armstrong Woodwinds (yes in my oboe) You can't pull them through the top joint, but you can through the bottom half. For the top joint, you basically pull until it stops, and then pull it back out, and repeat a couple of times. That way there is no worry of getting the swab stuck.
