FWIW, I use the term "mass" rather than "width" to indicate the amount of material that comprises the barrel external to the bore.
Otherwise, people confuse "width" with diameter of either the bore or sockets. Likewise, the use of the word "volume" in this context can be confusing (amount of wood vs. volume of the bore column)
