I know the official literature says the vintage R13 is a throwback to the original R13 (among other things the placement of the register key is 1mm different).
My questions are as follows:
Exactly when did Buffet change to the 'new placement." My R13 was made around 1982 or 1983
Why did they change---i.e., was there some advantage to the new placement, etc.
In other words, did they improve the R13 and now through clever marketing (all in US should be very familar with this) they are trying to pass off the unimproved versions at a premium price?

Being a Selmer and a Bufet player ,let me throw in a few things to let you chew on:
--- the Buffet Vintage tunes and plays more like the 50s and 60s models, and responds like them as well. In terms of tone it is very similar, however, the throat notes act somewhat differnetly from the modern counterpart. The throat register has a certain openess that the newer model does not possess, and as far as I am concerned it is really a personal preference over which is better.
----Let me also add, the bore working is slightly differnet in the upper cone and for that info you should get in touch with Boosey and Hawkes. The Vintage also comes with 2 barrells as well, so at least they give a choice. I would tend to purchase one these clarinets(vintage) with the option of going through a number of them. Alot of players are really in love with them, and seem to be happy. as for me I think an instrument has is choosen on individual merit over specifications and faddish stuff. Best luck DD

I have just bought a Buffet 'Vintage' model and right now would say it's the best clarinet I've ever tried. The bottom register is really deep, it scales very evenly indeed and the altissimo strikes a perfect balance between sweetness and projection.

The Buffet people made the instrument less resistant during the modifications.
Be prepared for an adaptive phase if you move from a 1990's version to one of the Vintage bores - they play distinctly different from one another.
The RC is a terrific instrument, and I can't fathom why it is less popular.
Nice players with good scales should be snapped up first...
