 Charles Russo and that sound!
Author: David Dow

Charles Russo was a teacher of mone in the early 80s at a summer camp in New England and immediately once hearing him was mesmerized. He has one of the great sounds of the clarinet and was wondering what his set up is? Full time students of his may be in the know...man he is a great solist!!!

Hi David,
I was a student of Charles Russo! I agree, I loved his sound too! About his set up though, I think it was a Bay mouthpiece, but not sure. sorry. I know his idea of sound has stayed with me for all this time! What are you doing now?

At the moment I'm in Holland and have switched to the Wurlitzer system that's used over here....even darker sound if you can believe it!

Play clarinet professionally in Canada with Symphony Nb as Principal clarinet and work alot in recording. Studied with Mr. Russo at a summer camp in 1983 and heard him play the Prokofiev Hebrew Themes live in New York and was awe inspired. As a student I remember him being very thorough and understanding of problems younger players have. His work is a true treat and to him in Stravinsky 3 Pieces in the private lessons once was a fantastic experience. He probably doesn't remember me though, I was just really beginning the instrument but his influence is great! It seems a shame more people don't know of this great artist even in North America!

I studied with him for 3 semesters in college, then transferred to another school. I agree that he was a thorough but sympathetic teacher. I have bought a few recordings that he made, the most notable of which is Stravinsky's "L'histoire du soldat." He also plays very convincing jazz.

I think I heard that he is at Manhattan now...anyone else know?

Although I can't remember thinking anything specific about Russo's sound I do remember hearing him on several occasions while a student in NY, 57-62 and admiring his playing very much. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
