 UV reed case

Is anyone using them? Not sure if it's okay to post links to products here, found this on Aliexpress: https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005001715690648.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.1.68a41e4ew12iqT&algo_pvid=fc1937ca-a2fc-4a92-9e90-c496b23c72cd&algo_exp_id=fc1937ca-a2fc-4a92-9e90-c496b23c72cd-0&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21EUR%2128.47%2128.47%21%21%2130.02%2130.02%21%40211b80d117296714086497833e1c93%2112000017301411492%21sea%21SI%21127652617%21X&curPageLogUid=bJleyqpn0kIe&utparam-url=scene%3Asearch%7Cquery_from%3A

Looks proper, but I don't hear much about those. It was suggested to me, that I get the case with the humidifying function, but I was thinking about how much germs and mold love humid wood, especially one that was soaked in saliva... So, what do you think about this?

UV barely penetrates glass, much less solid wood. So it would only work on the surface at best. At worst it would produce ozone which is harmful to your lungs and everything else in your case. This is a hard pass from me.

I don't think it has to penetrate wood very deep for it to be effective and the quantity of ozone produced is highly likely miniscule.

I have a small ozone machine, with which I've treated cars apartments and a couch. Of course ozone is harmful, but only if you breathe it in, so, if used properly, it's all fine.

Having said that, if this case does indeed produce a non negligible amount of ozone, which aids in killing germs and mold, a simple zip-lock bag would annul the risk of breathing it in. Ozone reverts to oxygen within 24 hours at the very most, and I would wager to say that your average laser printer produces orders of magnitude more ozone than this device.

The question is still, if any of this actually works. I mean, the UV light might be too weak or might work on the reeds in the middle, the ozone might not be produced at all...

Anyway, the other question is then, are you using a reed case with humidity function or without?

I see that they make similar UV light boxes for Smart Phones. The light only shines on one side however, so presumably you would have to flip the phone in the box to sterilize it. Why you would want to sterilize your phone is utterly beyond me, but although it makes some sense for reeds, I rather wonder if you would likewise have to flip them to expose both sides to the lamp. As I recall the UV spectrum that produces ozone is a different frequency bandwidth than that typically used for killing bacteria, but I wouldn't expect Aliexpress to be bothered with such minor details.

It's from Ali Express (part of Alibaba), similar to Temu. You get what you pay for, more or less. Very cheap, cheaply made, and the seller STILL makes a pretty good profit. Or used to. PDD, the owner of Temu, isn't in the best financial shape right now.

I'm using the Vandoren hygro reed cases, which I'm very happy with - no problems with mold, and I find the coloured "button" indicating when water needs to be added to the sponge as very practical. On the pictures of that Ali Express product, I can't see any venting holes on the housing. Wouldn't thus be surprised if mold eventually started developing on the reeds, despite the UV light (moistened reeds should never be stored in an airtight, or poorly vented container of any kind).
