I, personally, never studied with Jimmy Hamilton -the great clarinetist of the Duke Ellington band for some 25 years- but I knew him well and had tremendous admiration for him. Are any of you out there former Jimmy Hamilton students? If, so, how did he teach? I know that he retired to the Virgin Islands and taught there privately. For years, I have been looking for the clarinet trios and quartets he composed on the 60s. -no way of finding the original manuscripts (they were never published).

There don't seem to be many...no answers. If any Jimmy Hamilton students exist, they're from the Virgin Islands. He never taught before retiring to that part of the world.

If anyone knows of a way to contact Jimmy PLEASE reach out to me I've been trying to get him as a guest on Clarineat and my other show about Radiohead for nearly 10 years.

Unfortunately, the only way to contact Jimmy Hamilton would be to have a seance since he passed away 30 years ago.

Perhaps you could reach Jimmy Hastings through his brother Pye who is on Facebook.

A friend of mine in Los Angeles, trumpet player Ron Sewer, grew up in the Caribbean and Jimmy Hamilton was his high school band director! I could put you in touch with him if you wish. Email me at jimjedeikin@gmail.com

Jim: Great! Thank you. I will email you. Can you imagine having Jimmy Hamilton as a high school band director?! A personal memory of Jimmy Hamilton: he would be sitting in his hotel room watching a baseball game on television and composing at the same time. We would chat a bit and he would compose at the same time. He played all saxophones, the baritone horn, piano, flute...and a little clarinet. Duke Ellington never used him on the flute because he didn't care for that instrument. He was an excellent Classical clarinetist, but never got a chance to play Classical music in public, unlike Benny Goodman. In fact, his tone was perhaps more suited to Classical music than Benny Goodman's was.
