I remember my jr hi band director saying she din't want too many 1st Bb clarinets because it was like sun rise on a ginny farm. She's a flautist.

Then I get to high school and the and director tells me to play down an octave when I'm 2nd chair as a freshman. He said the passage was getting to clarinets and we were playing Procession Of The Nobles.

I get to college and am put out of the band because on 3rd clarinet, I'm playing the part as it's written on 3rd clarinet on Semper Fidelis.

I heard a retired band director say he told his Eb clarinet player to play own an octave and I personally hit the roof! I remember the Eb player in college played every thing down an octave bcoz she didn't want t get cussed out and the professor thought she did well.

The hs director is a trombonist and the professor a trumpet player. The retired guy is also a trumpet player.

What is going on with this and how u y'all feel about this?

Well, there are usually fewer 1st clarinets in a band because being in the clarion register much of the time the part carries better and not as many are needed to balance the section. Our band is pretty typical-- 3 (sometimes 4) 1sts, 4-5 2nds, 6 or so 3rds. One bass clarinet. One Eb who plays the part AS WRITTEN!

The other 3 things you list are stupid.
