Alternatives to Peter Spriggs Floating Rail Ligature?
Author: KMeredoodle

Hi there!

I didn't think ligatures mattered until a few months ago. At the time, I'd started to sound fuzzy, probably due to my reeds warping from the back and forth of cold and warm weather in the fall. To make sure it was an issue with the reeds and not my instrument or technique, my professor had me try her ligatures, and it made a MASSIVE and immediate difference in my tone quality. I've gotten some new reeds since then, so I no longer sound really fuzzy, but I'm still really interested in a new ligature, considering how big the difference was.

I tried the BG Duo, which made my sound less fuzzy and everything was more responsive, but it also made my sound a little too tinny/bright, which I don't love.

I also tried the Peter Spriggs Floating Rail ligature which sounded incredible and felt great. It gave me a rich, round, mellow sound with no fuzz, so I was super sad when I realized they weren't available anymore. I've searched second-hand sites and can't find them there either.

Do any of you have suggestions for ligatures available today that sound similar to the Spriggs?

Right now, I play with a Rovner Dark Bb clarinet ligature.

Thanks so, so much! I'd also buy one used from anyone, but I understand that they're coveted.

Are you still looking for a Spriggs ligature? I know someone (a very fine musician who predominantly plays jazz sax but started life as a Navy band clarinet player) who bought MY old one 2nd hand, but doesn't use it anymore.
A ligature I'd recommend if you can't find one is the BG Duo.

I definitely am still looking for one! I wouldn't want to bother them too much, but if you know they wouldn't be, my email is quentinandmargo@gmail.com. Thanks for the rec!

This is the first that I heard that they are no longer available. Peter's website is still up https://www.pspriggs.com/.

There's one listed for sale, new, on "that auction site" being sold by Weiner music. Also listed on Weiner music's web site.

Never mind. Just noticed it was for bass clarinet.

Peter said so himself a few year ago that he was no longer making the Floating Rail Ligature.

Hey I'm sorry Kate- I dropped the ball on this and didn't get around to passing your email on to Steve... If you'd rather buy from Dennis above that might be easier as shipping will be cheaper from USA rather than NZ (which will cost about $20 US$ for "economy tracked")
Steve is still keen if Dennis changes his mind... either way the BB helped you find what you were after!!!

Thanks for the update! No need to apologize at all! I'm going to email Dennis first, and if that falls through I will definitely get back in contact with you. Thank you so much!

Looking at the design, I would think the Vandoren Optimum would be similar.

The François Louis ligatures appear to be designed along a similar priniciple as the Spriggs. Their Ultimate Ligature model is most similar, but is not available for the Bb soprano clarinet. (It's available for alto and bass clarinets as well as for saxes.) Their Pure Brass ligature, which is available for the Bb soprano, is a bit different. The reed plate on all models is significantly different from the Spriggs, although there are alternative plates available. I have the Pure Brass alto clarinet model. I like it better than some but it's not my favorite. A bit difficult to keep positioned. I've never tried a Spriggs, so really can't compare the two. You can find possible vendors on the Francois Louis web site.

I have a Spriggs and it's very nice, I'm just sad it's a bit too small to fit on my Behn mouthpieces.

The element of the "Floating Rail" ligature that no other ligature has (to my knowledge) is that the rails that contact the reed will adjust to the shape of the reed butt, holding any reed with the same pressure regardless if the butt is slightly lopsided etc

At one time, Peter (for a small price) would supply longer screws to accommodate the Behn mouthpieces (or any other mouthpiece that made its use problematic). You might check with him regarding that should you be interested.

Hi Dennis, is your ligature still available?

I’d be interested in buying if it is. I too have been looking for a Spriggs ligature and would love to buy yours from you if it is still available.

Thank you so much! I love spam! And I love that there’s no way to report it on this board.

Of course there is. Mark and I catch a lot of it but we hear from members about spam that we miss. My email address is in my profile. Mark's is at the bottom of the page.
