Recommendations for humidified reed case that holds 10 reeds
Author: moolatte

Why do the major reed manufacturers like Vandoren and Rico sell 5 or 10 reeds in a box, but their (humidified) reed case solutions they also sell only hold a number that doesn't cleanly divide into the amount that comes in a box?

For example, the D'addario humidified reed case (formerly made by Rico) holds 8 reeds, and many of the Vandoren reed cases I see on Amazon only hold 4/6/8 reeds at once.

Why? What convenience or advantage does not being able to have all your new reeds in a rotation provide?

To that, does anyone have any other suggestions for a good humidified reed case where I can just dump all 10 reeds from a new box? There are the felt cases with a glass back, but they don't seem to be able to fit a humidifier pack inside. I found something like

https://www.amazon.com/Protec-Clarinet-Reeds-Opaque-A250/dp/B0002CZZJ2

but it appears to have problems with the reed grips digging into the reeds. I currently use the D'addario/Rico humidified reed case which uses plastic bands to hold the reeds in place.

Reeds n stuff hygrocase perhaps? And learn how to calibrate the hygrometer. And use a mixture of propylene alcohol and water with the piece of sponge that works as a humidifier in that. You might want to check cigar humidifyer pages too. I never owned one but used ricos system. They used to have a airtight plastic bag where to put the reeds too. In the end i changed to legeres!

You can consider

or for a cheaper option

My best recommendations for a humidified reed case lie outside of the realm of a music store.

To rephrase in riddle form: "what's the difference between 2 boxes, one with a treble clef on the outside?" The one with the tremble clef costs $25 more.

To rephrase in anecdote: this discontinued Rico item https://www.walmart.com/ip/Rico-Reed-Vault-Reed-Storage-System-0-73/541336970 was quite literally a repurposed Lock N Lock 1.5 cup food tray with different branding outside.

https://www.amazon.com/Water-Divider-Container-1-5-cup-HPL806C/dp/B00GYSUM96 for twice the price.

Get the lock n lock cup, scotch tape two Boveda packs to the inside lid and store all the reeds your heart desires.
