Have you played GD reeds recently?
Author: manuel78

Hi!
I'm new at the formum. I've been a reader for a long time, but this is the first time I post something. My name is Manuel Torres, from Spain. I've been a Gonzalez GD player for a couple of years in my Bb. I recently purhcased a new box and find them a bit different. At the beginning I felt they were just kind of harder, but with time I got used to, and now I notice they are more vibrant and with more projection, without loosing control in difficult notes.
I looked at their website and facebook, and haven't seen any oficial comunication about any change. Has anyone played them recently and noticed something different?
Now I have to see how long do they last, and if this is a change or just the box I purchased that was different...

Some years ago I had a similar but opposite experience with Rico/D'Addario Reserve Classic. It was at the time the branding was changing from Rico to D'Addario. From what I was able to establish its seems the reed cutting machinery had been upgraded. I expect they either couldn't exactly reproduce the same cut on the new equipment or took the opportunity to introduce a slightly different cut for the RC line. However, for me, the RC have never been as good as they were under the Rico brand

I had the same experience at the same time. I bought up what I could find of the Rico version and then started searching. Vandoren V21s were pretty new at the time, and I found that they were similar to the Reserve Classics. But I ended up following Brad Behn and started playing Peter Leuthner's which he was selling at the time, and then on to Brad's Aria and Brio.

Hi Manuel,

In reference to the GD reeds, did you find that you had to change the strength of reed you were playing?
Also, have you compared the GD reeds with the FOF reeds? I am thinking of trying both.

Good evening 2 every 1! I'm so grateful and thankful 4 being a part of a community of people who get "reedy" every so often. I never understood how my female clarinet professor in college could have 100s of different kinds of Rees and knew which 1s 2 play on @ any given time.

I'm a fan of Vandoren for all my upper woodwind instruments. About a 4 is good enough 4 me to have great control of the instruments.

I've heard of the reeds that r mentored but never played on them. I require a stiffer reed 2 control all registers of my instruments.

1 time my college band director fussed @ the upper woodwinds because hey were fooling with their reeds because the couldn't play the woodwind obligato.

I'm attaching a reed chart to better help this community;

At the beggining I thought to change the strength, but after a little bit of playing I found the strength fits me as good as before. In general, I like this change. Never tried the FOF, but in general I don't like narrow reeds.
I've sent Gonzalez an email to know if its just my impression, my box, or they really did change something.

From what I knok, V21 is V12 with a narrow blank. Never tried them, but I tried 56 rue le pic, and in general I don't feel confortable with narrow reeds.

In response to the original post: I received a small complimentary variety of Gonzalez reeds, including GD, at ClarinetFest 2022. Yes, I find these new GD Gonzalez reeds to be very vibrant and responsive, so much so that the sound is actually edgy.

@Hy-Dex Sorry about this question, but I'm still learning english. What do you mean with "edgy"?

I generally do not like to use the words "bright" or "dark" in reference to clarinet tone as "warmth" and "brilliance" are more useful, relevant terms. However, in terms of the GD reeds, I use the term "edgy" to indicate "annoyingly bright."

To meaningfully evaluate a reed, you'd have to account for the way it plays on a specific mouthpiece. I have found reeds of certain brands to sound much more brilliant (if you like that term better than "brighter") on some of the mouthpieces I own than on others. Reeds that sound quite dull on one mouthpiece, likewise, may sound much fuller and richer on another.

If you like the mouthpiece you're using, then a reed that sounds too colorful, maybe buzzy, on that mouthpiece isn't what you should use. But that result is produced by the combination (adding influences from your instrument and your approach to sound production).

I had given up on Gonzalez GD for a few years, they seemed to be dull and dead. Then, I saw on the Weiner music site that they were selling *NEW* Gonzalez GD reeds, which supposedly were a bit more selective in the cane they were using. I bought them and they truly were much more vibrant, full and resonant! And I've been using them again for the past few years

Unfortunately, on Weiner they've been sold out for a few months and I fear they've been discontinued? Anyone have any word on this?
