Loose barrel solution that isn't plumber's tape?
Author: Musikat

I have two barrels I want to be able to use interchangeably. One is a MoBa and the other is the Behn adjustable (for orchestra). The problem is the MoBa barrel is very loose fitting. I had my tech put thicker cork on the top joint The Behn still fit, but snuggly. He warned me that as the cork compressed over time and from using the adjustable barrel the MoBa would get loose again, and it has.

My question is has anyone come up with any kind of solution that would fit inside the barrel socket of the bigger barrel to make it fit more securely, but not impact the cork so another barrel could still be used normally? Any kind of tape, for example? A thin strip of wood that could be glued on? I'm looking for a cheap DIY solution, not paying a tech to do it.

Superglue is the answer. Degrease the inside of the socket and smear a thin layer of superglue. You can repeat the process till the socket diameter is just right. If you overdo it, you can open it out with sandpaper.

Fingernail polish, easier to remove than superglue

I have the same problem. Backun barrel too loose on Leblance Dynamique. Fingernail polish sounds better than super glue.

You might want to try Sally Hansen's "Hard as Nails". I use it fairly often on a fingernail that keeps splitting. It dries pretty fast so putting on extra coats isn't time consuming at all.

I've not tried fingernail polish. The virtue of a layer of superglue, apart from durability, is that when you sand the surface and oil it, it has an appearance pretty close to black wood, so you have to look carefully at the socket to see that it's been modified (which I think is an important criterion). How does fingernail polish do in this regard? I suppose you can buy it coloured black, which come to think of it might then also provide a convenient way of modifying toneholes unobtrusively.

John P, how do you apply superglue? Smearing it out with a finger, or something else? How to get an even layer?

Micke: I use a small screwdriver to spread the glue, which has the virtue that it's easy to wipe most of the glue off it afterwards and scrape off the remaining residue. It's not too hard to spread the glue uniformly initially; then I rotate the barrel slowly by hand while horizontal for about a minute to stop the glue pooling in any one position. Superglue sets pretty quickly, and blowing on it speeds the process.

Unless you want a barrel for a finger, don't use your fingers with super glue. It can glue them in a second...
