Hello lads,
I am grateful to have been accepted to and waitlisted at two exceptional uni programs in the US. I was accepted to an exceptional studio in LA, and I am hoping to be accepted off the Yale waitlist as the school of music provides an exceptional scholarship. Both teachers are bloody fantastic — just not sure how things will play out with cost of living and university in the US. I also applied to some European programs.
Does anyone know how long the waitlist at Yale is this year/how many openings? We are unsure how many students were admitted in the recent admissions decision.

Look at who is winning auditions.
Both Schifrin and Gilad have had many successful students, but I think you will find Gilad has the edge.
There is also something to be said for chemistry. I assume you have had lessons with both teachers. Did you get along better with one over the other?
Also, would you rather live in New Haven or LA? It's less expensive to live in New Haven (and it's relatively close to Boston and New York) but LA is more glamorous (but not the USC neighborhood, I'm afraid).
And then there's the weather...
What about playing opportunities outside of school (assuming we ever go back to live performances!). LA may have the edge here. As a former long-time resident of CT, I can tell you opportunities there are limited, especially for orchestral positions.
At any rate these are both great schools with successful teachers, so either choice should work out for you.

I recommend taking some time to look at pictures and the size of both communities, and consider their connections (or lack of) with other communities. Two photos attached. They are basically polar opposites. Private/Public. East/West. Cool/Warm. Old/New. Gothic/Modern. Oaks/Palms. Preppies/Hippies. Atlantic/Pacific. Etc.
New Haven and Yale are simply beautiful. It’s like a cross between Oxford and Small Town, USA. It’s walkable. It’s exactly what “college” brings to mind. It’s comfortable. I always felt weird walking around on campus at Harvard as a visitor. I really enjoyed wandering around Yale to see all the buildings.
I love SoCal for the sun, ocean, and lots of beautiful nature, but LA is a disaster. The worst suburban sprawl. The whole immense valley from the mountains to the sea is one gianormus sprawl. The picture above is only a small part of the vastness of the San Fernando Valley sprawl. I’ve never been to the USC campus. SoCal culture is very laid back - you’re ok, I’m ok, he’s ok, she’s ok, they’re ok, we’re ok, everything’s ok. I haven’t lived in LA though.
New Haven is not too far from Boston and NYC, not super convenient, but not too far either. It’s on the Amtrak NE route between DC - NY - Boston. It takes about 4 hrs from DC to NY, and four from NY to Boston. Driving time is about the same. New Haven is a little closer to NY than Boston. https://www.amtrak.com/routes/northeast-regional-train.html
LA will offer more career options without moving, but they may be hard to get, and you may have to spend a lot of time sitting in traffic, and you have to live in LA or commute. Yale is on a more human scale. You have to think of it as one part of New England and the Mid Atlantic, rather than in isolation. People on the East Coast tend to get around a lot on the East Coast, so it’s likely that you will have opportunities to have connections from DC, NY, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Boston - as well as occasions to visit. I could leave my front door in Alexandra VA, and get to school in Brookline, MA by Air or Train, without driving or getting in a taxi. You will need a car in LA.
Both schools will look good on a resume, but I expect Yale would look better, especially as undergrad. They also have an “Institute of Sacred Music” with a separate “campus”, not far from the main campus.

If you're still thinking of Europe, consider Belgium. There are a few great clarinet teachers there, the cost of living isn't prohibitive and the beer is good. The sanitary crisis would have to end though.

Well, *I* want to go to Yale.
I went to undergrad an hour or so north of LA, outside of Santa Paula, where it was very pretty. The best part about LA was taking off from LAX over the water, right as the sun went down, and being completely enveloped in the Pacific sunset.

Either school is fine but how are you at flying home each year? You’ll need snow gear for those eastern storms. Gas is more expensive in California. There are no cheap housing for students either. Good luck.
