 Phil Woods' clarinet improvisations

Phil Woods, the alto sax great, on occasion played clarinet (which he majored in at Julliard) and did a complete CD album on clarinet in duets with the Brazilian guitarist Irio de Paula.

Here are two standards from the set that feature Woods' distinctive clarinet style. He avoided the usual noodling and high register wails and didn't try to graft his alto style onto the clarinet. Instead he coaxes out some fine motive development over the changes that is melodic and should appeal even to fans of much older jazz styles. From the much overlooked album, Encontro: Days of Wine and Roses, and Autumn Leaves.

Seabreeze,

I'm still chuckling at the "Girl From Ipanima" quote in Autumn Leaves...wasn't expecting that!

Really thoughtful playing, and you're right - he mostly plays the clarinet like it is a clarinet. Very refreshing!

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Seabreeze! didn't know about the duet album, looking forward to listening.

I'll just add in my 2c, here's Phil playing clarinet on a cover of "Let's Dance." The recording was made by survivors of Benny's Russia tour in 1962...and if the arrangement starts out sounding a little dour, it's because NOBODY had a good time on the tour because....well, Benny.

Other soloists: Eddie Costa, piano; Gene Allen, bari; trumpet, Marky Markowitz.

(Incidentally, I love Mel Lewis' drumming on this. Tasteful, perfect!)
