Phil Woods' clarinet improvisations

Phil Woods, the alto sax great, on occasion played clarinet (which he majored in at Julliard) and did a complete CD album on clarinet in duets with the Brazilian guitarist Irio de Paula.

Here are two standards from the set that feature Woods' distinctive clarinet style. He avoided the usual noodling and high register wails and didn't try to graft his alto style onto the clarinet. Instead he coaxes out some fine motive development over the changes that is melodic and should appeal even to fans of much older jazz styles.
