I just picked up my bass clarinet from the repair shop. The notes are fuller and rounder; however, the lower register key is at a different level than the thumb (F) key. That said, when I try to play cross from Bb to B, I have to roll my thumb over more than I do with my Bb (see images).

Also, is the adjustment screw for the register key supposed to stick out as far as it does?

Any help much appreciated.

It’s a good thing the thumb F key is set high because this helps prevent F# from being too stuffy. On many bass clarinets the key is set to the same height as the register key which is often far too low. The register key can be adjusted up and down, but it may involve bending the key and having a thicker cork added. Obviously you should have a tech do this.

As for the adjustment screw. As long as the Bb vent does not open up in the upper register then it is okay. Sometimes it needs to be backed all the way out, although this is not ideal. As long as everything stays in adjustment then there is no issue.

The Bb register key wasn't closing. Thank you. I fixed it.

You can have the speaker key touch raised up to make it more comfortable to use - it should sit higher than the LH thumb plate while that's held down so you can move onto it without going over the edge of the thumb plate, then when in use it's level with the thumb plate.

It will require a much thicker cork than it currently has to make that possible. The venting on the thumb plate is good - you want that to open as much as it can within reason for a clear F#.
