i thought this might be an interesting topic for two reasons: 1. It would acquaint us with many works we are not necessarily familiar with. 2. Other people that will play the work may want to consult you to know what the composer had in mind in terms on interpretation.

I will start the ball rolling by answering my own question. I have given first performances of several pieces by the American composer Gordon Sherwood, who was known as " Der Bettler Komponist" -the beggar composer. He earned his living by begging on the streets of Paris, roomed in flea-bag hotels,...and was an absolute musical genius. Now, it is your turn to tell us about the works you have premiered and what you think of them.

Ruben, you must mean solo pieces. For those who play(ed) in a contemporary music ensemble, the number of premiered pieces can easily number several hundred, after a coupe of decades in the ensemble. In part because contemporary organizations and festivals fetishize premieres. A contemporary concert has more cachet if it features one or more premieres.

When I was a student at Queens College (NYC) and in the QC Orchestra ('70s), we performed several pieces by Ravel that one of the profs. discovered. No way I can recall their names.

I think any clarinet player who is interested and actively involved in a sophisticated artistic environment is going to end up playing many premieres throughout their career. The interesting factor is how many of them are worth a second and third performance...
As an example, the repertoire I've played at the 4 Clarinet-fests I've performed at included almost entirely of premieres- or "US premieres" of works that had been only recently written.
Over the years there have been 2 works I've premiered, and been very sad to have many opportunities to play repeatedly (and disappointed that other musicians didn't embrace).
- A clarinet/piano sonata by Ted (Frederick) Trobaugh entitled "Julian and Maddalo", I recorded this for a CD in 1997 and performed it once or twice then. In 2002 I again performed this piece a few times in NZ and Germany, but since then have not had an opportunity to play it again (I really really feel I can do a much better job that the 97 recording!). The piano part for this sonata is insanely difficult, which is part of the problem...
- "Thirteen ways of looking at a Blackbird" by Alex Taylor (NZ composer now living in USA) for Clarinet, Countertenor and String quartet. I posted about this piece on this forum with little result. A really good piece with 2 minor shortcomings- it's hard to find a countertenor (Taylor verbally agreed to make a version for Soprano, but would need a potential performance to push him to action) and there are a few obvious Quartet for the end of time quotes that may inspire a rolling of the eyes, but are gone in a whisper and there isn't a derivative moment in the whole rest of the piece.

There have been many many other premieres, too many to remember and of little interest here on the BB, but those two stand out as deserving to be better known.

Hi Ruben,
The Benjamin was the recently discovered Quintet in C minor from 1913/14 and was found in the British Library with his papers etc. It was dug out in around 2014 by Ian Munro of the Australian Ensemble and a performance was given in Australia that same year. I was involved in the publication which sought to iron out some of the issues from the manuscript which where not quite right in the Australian performance. My performance was Sept 2019 with the Tippett Quartet at Conway Hall, London.
If I had to choose it would be the Susan Spain-Dunk because of its emotional depth and you’ll be able to hear in a premier recording for the BBC later this year. The Ruth Gipps because it’s the concerto that Vaughan Williams might have written and Peter Wishart because of the combination of pastiche and seriousness. You’ll also hear that on the disc with the Spain-Dunk.
PS the Gipps recording is coming out this month or next with my fabulous colleague Robert Plane as soloist.
