Consistency of intonation between Yamaha CSVRs?
Author: nellsonic

I was just testing a new Yamaha CSVR A Clarinet for a student. It was my first opportunity to play one of these, and I have to say that it seems to live up to the hype. Beautiful sound, response, evenness, and a light, even, and well adjusted action.

I haven't spent enough time with it yet, but my one minor concern is intonation. Like so many Buffets the 12ths on the low E and F are wide (flat at the bottom). It's manageable, but I'm wondering if this is to be expected with this model.

How much variation am I likely to find from CSVR to CSVR?

The store only has this one, but they have offered to make an appointment for me with Atelier in Buena Park. I may go up there just for my own education, although I may indeed purchase a new A clarinet or pair for myself as well!

Low E and F being flat is an universal problem for all clarinets, particularly for clarinets in A. For this, German professional models all have correction mechanism. Now more and more French clarinets also begin to equip with one.

I guess I've been spoiled by my Ridenours in that regard! My real question though is how consistent CSVR's are one to another. Hopefully someone like Tom P or Bob B who has experience in this will be able to chime in.

I've heard that it has always been a problem. But many say that Ridenour clarinets are really good in terms of intonation for E and F

Try different barrels and mouthpieces. I had this issue and it's gone. I wrote in the past that the Vandoren M series mouthpieces are too long and the bores are too big. The Yamaha barrels are strange. Some have reverse tapers some don't. I think you need a reverse taper of .20" or so, depending on your mouthpiece. The Vandoren RD 5 is about 1/32" shorter and plays more in tune. But the tip opening is about 1.20mm's. I prefer something around what some of the old Chedeville's and older Kaspar's were. 3 1/2" in length. With a reverse bore you should be happy. Very happy. The A clarinet I have is the best A I've ever played.

I've had three private students get Bb CSVR's, and I had a Bb/A set that I sold last year when I liquidated all of my high-end gear.

They were all practically identical, even going from Bb to A. Great instruments!

Low E and F on my Buffet R13 Bb Prestige clarinet are just fine as well as the 12ths B and C.

Wes, they will be flat when you play them in forte.

saxlite - Playing on the CSVR's. The A clarinet plays like the Bb. The resistance feels about the same. With Buffets the A can be stuffy. Or a shade more stuffy. This is why the Yamaha feels so good. You feel like you are playing on a Bb.
